Instructions for Authors

What should I write about?

We welcome you to write about anything that you believe deserves attention — as long as it’s from a gender perspective. A list of ideas will be sent out monthly to give you some inspiration. However, you don’t have to choose one of these topics — the blog is open for your thoughts and opinions on the subjects that you feel warrant a discussion. Areas of focus could be currents affairs, trends, film, television shows, music, etc. If you would like to write about a topic that someone else has already written about, that is fine too. Just make sure that you are adding to the debate, not just repeating what they have already said. Aside from the gender component, the only other aspect that we wish to truly emphasise is passion — we urge you to write from a place of true emotion and we want this to be visible through your words.

What should the articles look like?

There is no definitive word limit to the articles but submissions should aim to be between 600-1000 words. They can be longer or shorter but remember this is a blog, not an essay. If an article exceeds 2000 words, readers are likely to get bored — however interesting the subject is. If you would like to contribute in a way that does not involve a written article (such as a video, for example), do let us know and we can happily work something out.

How should I submit an article?

Please send your articles to submissions@genderandthecity.com in Word Document form, if possible. In the Subject line, please follow this format: ‘Article by FULL NAME, DATE on SUBJECT’. Please name the document of your article with this information as well. If the article is particularly time sensitive please add *TOPICAL* to the beginning of the Subject line.

Don’t forget to send a short author bio, photograph (optional) and 4 – 8 keywords along with your submission!

Whilst we have an extremely competent and hard-working Editing Team, please proofread your article before you send it to us.

Dates for your diary

Our monthly deadline is the 25th of each month.  Any submissions before this date will be much appreciated but you do have until midnight on that day to send in your articles to us. We would also appreciate it if you could let us know what you would like to write about before you start, just so that we don’t have too much repetition or overlap amongst writers. If you could give us an idea of what you hope to write about by the 20th of each month, that would be great, that way we can also get an idea of how many articles to expect.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are always available and happy to help.
